Just 27 Rhodesian Independence Decorations were awarded, 16 of them to U.D.I. signatories.
Sold with original Programme and Admission Card for the opening of the Parliament of Rhodesia, 25.6.1969, together with Air Ministry letter confirming the replacement of the recipient's 1939-45 War awards in October 1995, and copied photographs and articles regarding his time as a Minister of Health, including his presence at the signing of the U.D.I. in 1965.
The Hon. Ian Finlay McLean, M.P., I.D., was born in Bulawayo in April 1919 and was educated locally at Milton School. Enlisting in the Royal Air Force in September 1941, he qualified for his 'Wings' in July 1942 and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer two months later. Thereafter, he 'served in all theatres, including the Pacific', very probably for much of the time as a Pilot with No. 44 (Rhodesian) Squadron. Entering the political arena after the War, McLean was elected M.P. for Bulawayo North in 1958 and for Queen's Park, Southern Rhodesia in 1962, and was latterly appointed Minister of Health and one of the signatories to the U.D.I. of 1965.
