Lot Essay

Sapper Oliver Hinton, who was from Bristol, died of wounds on the Somme on 27.10.1916, while serving with 83rd Field Company, R.E., 20th Light Division. He had originally landed in France in July 1915 and served for several months with his unit in the Laventie Sector, prior to participating in the Delville Wood and other operations on the Somme until his death at Le Transloy in October 1916.

Driver J. Milne served with 88th Field Company, R.E., 13th Division in Gallipoli from July 1915 to January 1916, including the landings at Sulva and the action at Scimitar Hill. Afterwards employed in the Mesopotamia operations, the 88th participated in the Tigris Campaign of January to April 1916, the actions around Kut and Baghdad between January and March 1917 and in the final push to the North.

Sapper J.B. Monaghan served with the 97th Field Company, R.E., 21st Division from the time of its arrival in France in September 1915, including the Battle of Loos, a lengthy sojourn on the Somme and more latterly the Battles of Passchendaele and Cambrai.
