Lot Essay
M.C. London Gazette 3.6.1919.
Major John MacDuff Latham, M.C., first entered the French Theatre of War with the 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry in mid-August 1914 but appears to have returned to the U.K. in the following month, quite probably as a result of wounds (Services of Military Officers 1920 refers). During this period the 2nd Battalion was hotly engaged, one of its number, Private George Wilson, winning a V.C. for his great bravery at Verneuill on 14.9.1914. Latham returned to France in February 1917 and remained on active service there until the end of hostilities.
