Lot Essay
M.C. London Gazette 25.11.1916 'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He led a raid against the enemy with great courage and determination. He set a splendid example to his men'.
Lieutenant Douglas Patrick Hadow, M.C., who was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire in February 1898, was commissioned into the Northumberland Fusiliers direct from London University O.T.C. Subsequently awarded the M.C. for his gallantry with the 1st Battalion at Serre on the Somme on 14.10.1916, he afterwards transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. Hadow remained in the newly created Royal Air Force at the end of hostilities but was sentenced to dismissal from the Service in late 1925 following a guilty verdict on non-payment of cheques. Copied P.R.O. papers included with the Lot suggest that he was allowed to retain his M.C.
