Bandmaster Arthur Pragnell, M.V.O., was born in Botley, Hampshire in October 1887 and enlisted in the Royal Marines as a Band Boy in September 1903. Advanced to Bandmaster 1st Class in late 1910, he joined the Ship's Company of H.M.S. Antrim, an Armoured Cruiser, two years later, and remained so employed for the duration of the Great War. The Antrim was the Flagship of the 3rd Cruiser Squadron in the Grand Fleet from 1914-16, in which period she captured a German Merchantman (6.8.1914) and participated in the Battle of Heligoland Bight. Pragnell's subsequent appointment to the Royal Victorian Order was in respect of his services as Director of Music aboard the Renown during the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to New Zealand.
