Warrant (dated 12.6.1941); Mention in Despatches Certificate as Lieutenant, Acting Captain, 3rd Battalion, attached 1st, Northamptonshire Regiment (dated 7.11.1917); and Commission Warrant for 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment (dated 22.4.1915).

Captain Frederick George Stephen Martin, C.I.E., M.C., who was born in Newcastle in August 1890, enlisted as a Private in the 'New Army' Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment at Peterborough in early September 1914. Commissioned into the 3rd Battalion as a 2nd Lieutenant in April 1915, Martin was actually posted to the 1st Battalion on the Western Front and remained employed there until the end of the War, participating in 'all the main actions of the 15th Division' and being twice wounded. Demobilised as a Captain in May 1919, Martin joined the Indian State Railways in 1923 and was appointed Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer of the East Indian Railways in 1928. Gaining steady advancement over the next decade, he next became Deputy Director-General of Engineering and Civil Production for the Government of India in 1939 and, in 1942, having been created a C.I.E., Additional Director-General of the Supply Department. Martin died in May 1981.
