PLATEA, Franciscus de. Opus restitutionum, usararum, excommunicationum. Padua: Leonardus Achates de Basilea, [not after 28th July] 1473.
Chancery 2o (297 x 212 mm). Collation: A10 B8; a-f10 g6 [h-q10]. 174 leaves. 40 lines, with printed marginal section-numbers, the first 9 quires with printed signatures in extreme lower right corner, the remaining quires with contemporary manuscript signatures. Roman type 1:104. Capital spaces. Initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes supplied in red. Two pinholes visible in outer margin. (Wormtracks at inner margin of a5-c5, a few wormholes penetrating from beginning to b5 occasionally catching letters, some intermittent small pale marginal dampstains, otherwise fine.)
Binding: contemporary South-German deerskin over unbevelled wooden boards, blind-tooled with fillets and interlace roll to a diamond pattern, the individual compartments edged with Kopfstempel and marked with curving double lines emanating from a central rosette forming a pattern of oak leaves in relief, rear cover with larger central diamond repeating the same tools, evidence of two clasps (worming to covers, small loss at foot of spine, inner hinges weak, some wear at extemities). Provenance: Monastary S. Felicitatis m Av (inscription on title) -- "In usum fratrum Anuensium 1600 jar" (inscription on front pastedown) -- 8 leaves contemporary manuscript referenced list of cases in canon law bound at beginning, further notes on B8v, g3r, g6v and [n]5v. -- Bibliotheca Canoniae ad B.V. Mariam Santamque Felicitatem (booklabel with printed date 1778) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from A.S.W. Rosenbach, Philadelphia, 3 April 1942) -- donated to SMS 1942.
Third edition, VERY FINE, TALL COPY. The present copy retains the printed signatures in the extreme lower right hand corners of the first 9 quires, as well as the contemporary manuscript signatures which follow. This is the third book issued by Achates's first press after he established himself in Padua. His edition of Platea's popular work on restitution, usury and excommunication is reprinted from that of Cremonensis, Venice, 1472 (Goff P-752). BMC notes that Achates adaptation of Cremonensis's well-known metrical colophon suggests that insufficient attention was paid to Latin prosody in Achates's alma mater, the Universtity of Basel; Achates here substitutes two words "in defiance of the metre." BMC VII, 909 (IB.29876; IB.29875); BSB-Ink. P-552; CIBN P-431; H *13036; Harvard/Walsh 2803, 2804; Pr 6776; Goff P-753.
