COSTA, Stephanus (fl. 1468). Rubricae de sententia excommunicationis interpretatio. Corrected by Gabriel Manganus. Pavia: Antonius de Carcano, 22nd October 1483.

Royal 2o (297 x 290 mm). Collation: a10 b-c8 d6 e10 f2. 66 lines, double column. Gothic type 4:83. Capital spaces. (Some mostly marginal worming occasionally catching a few letters, generally very crisp and fresh.)

Binding: contemporary South-German quarter pigskin over unbevelled wooden boards, blind tooled with double fillets, Kopfstempel and large and small rosette tools, two brass fore-edge catches (some worming and very slight wear at extremities). Provenance: some contemporary marginalia, pointing fingers -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 31 August 1944) -- donated to SMS 1944.

FIRST AND ONLY INCUNABLE EDITION. Except for a single edition issued by Joannes de Sidriano claiming to be printed in Pavia, the first established press in that town was that of Antonius de Carcano. His total output of some fifty editions makes his press the most considerable of the day in Pavia. Like the present work, an examination of the laws surrounding excommunication, most of the books issued by de Carcano's press were legal or medical works for the use of students. A variant of the colophon is recorded by Goff and GW. The present work is RARE: ISTC lists only 7 copies in institutional collections, with only one copy (besides the present) in America. GW 7810; HR 5786=H5787; IGI 3249; Goff C-949.
