Thick 8o (240 x 172 mm). Title printed in red and black. Title within woodcut border containing representations of the Pope seated among eight cardinals and portraits of saints, woodcut initials throughout. (Title a bit soiled and with a few chips at edges, m5-6 misbound in quire n, a few marginal repairs, wormtracks in gutter margin occasionally catching a few letters, some occasional light spotting and pale dampstaining.) 17th-century vellum over pasteboard (spine and spine label worn, hinges weak). Provenance: Johannes Andraes Gentilis (early inscription on title) -- Inscription on front flyleaf: "Francisco Xav[ie]r Mariasegui"? -- George Barlow Oldham (notes querying the Xavier signature and with purchase date of 2 December 1858 on front flyleaf) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 31 August 1944) -- donated to SMS 1944.
The earliest Latin version of the Bible made from the original Hebrew and Greek. Pagninus began his translation ca 1493 and completed it before 1520. In that year he showed his manuscript to Pope Leo X who directed that it should be revised and put to press under his expense. It is the earliest edition of the Bible in which the text is divided into numbered verses. Adams B-1008; Darlow & Moule 6108.
