Title printed in red and black and within woodcut border, section titles to parts second to fourth parts and New Testament within woodcut borders, woodcut initials. (A few wormholes on approximately 30 leaves at beginning, occasionally touching letters, chip on fore-margin of FFf3 touching a shoulder note, a few headlines just shaved slightly, tear crossing text on RRr6 patched on lower margin, some minor mostly marginal soiling or dampstains, lower corner patched on FFf6.) 19th-century blindstamped black morocco. Provenance: early inscription on colophon -- endleaves with extensive 18th- and 19th-century notations -- Estelle Doheny (purchased from Rosenbach, 20 4 1942) -- donated to SMS 1942.

A VERY RARE COMPLETE COPY OF MATHEW'S VERSION OF THE BIBLE. This edition was printed by Nicolas Hyll for "certayne honest menne of the occupacyon, whose names be upon their bokes" (colophon). Herbert lists six variant imprints, each giving different names in the imprint. This copy corresponds with his "C" variant and gives Thomas Petyt's name on the title-page.
