BIBLE, English. The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testament. London: John Field, 1656.
12o (150 x 83 mm). General title with engraved historiated border incorporating figures of Moses and David and the Evangelists, section title for the New Testament within typographic border. Text double column, ruled throughout in red. (Small marginal tear on M11 with loss of a few letters, a few head-lines and catchwords shaved, imprint partly crossed out on TT12v.)
Binding: 17th-century English black gilt-panelled goatskin, covers with outer border of semi-circles, small diamond and cross tools, repeated in the inner border, with floral tools at corners, central floral ornament built up from smaller tools, initials "S S" on covers, spine gilt-decorated in six compartments, with five raised bands, board edges and turn-ins gilt, comb-marbled pastedowns, two silver clasps (some light wear along spine, inner hinges reinforced). Provenance: Mark Estwicke (inscription dated 1670 on front flyleaf) -- Susanna Shuttleworth (binding; inscription dated 1695 on front flyleaf) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 16 February 1942) -- donated to SMS 1942.
