BIBLE, German. Die gantze Bibel... den ursprünglichen spraachen nach, auffs aller neuwlichest verteutschet. The preface ascribed to Huldreich Zwingli. Zurich: Christoph Froschover, 1536-39.
2 volumes in one, 2o (335 x 232 mm). Collation: [1]6 aaa-bbb6 ccc4 a-z A-T8 V6; aa-zz AA-PP8 QQ10. 676 leaves (of 678 with blank ccc4 but lacking blank V6 and blank? Q10). Titles and woodcut border surrounding titles printed in red and black, 198 WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS (60 x 87 mm) by and after Hans Holbein and others (a few repeats) and one large woodcut (134 x 179 mm), numerous woodcut initials and historiated woodcut initials. (Light browning and staining, a few minor tears and chips, mostly with old repairs, title and Q9 reinforced along gutter margin.) Contemporary blind tooled calf over wooden boards, brass clasps (catches missing, lower joint cracked, with chipping to leather of spine). Provenance: early ink notations at beginning -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from W.H. Schab, 18 August 1943) -- donated to SMS 1943.
A MAGNIFICENTLY ILLUSTRATED BIBLE in a contemporary binding. The majority of the woodcuts were made after Holbein's drawings by the so called "Bible monogrammist VS," probably the Strassburg cutter Veit Rudolf Specklin or Speckle, who is best known by his famous woodcuts to Fuchs' herbal (Basel, 1542). The influence of these cuts was great. H.S. Beham used them for example for his famous illustrations to the Coverdale Bible of 1535.
Although the arrangement of the illustrations in the present 1536-39 edition largely agress with the 1531 edition, there are a number of important additions: A few woodcuts (Leeman numbers 37-41) were newly cut for the 1536 edition by Specklin, probably after drawings by Holbein. New is also the woodcut illustration of Habakuk bringing a meal to harvesters, which was left out by error in the 1531 edition. In addition there are 21 new cuts to the Apocalypse, after earlier cuts by Holbein (see Muther plates 221-5) excellently cut in reverse and corrected, probably also after new drawings by Holbein. Adams B-1165; Darlow and Moule 4196; Leeman-van Elck Der Buchschmuck der Zuericher Bibel bis 1800 pp.34-60; Muther 1815 (1531 edition).
