2 volumes bound in one, narrow 2o (323 x 145 mm). Titles within ornamental borders, text within rule border. (Some occasional pale spotting.) Contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt (spine partly perished, rear cover starting). Provenance: Frederick Hunter, Bishop of Zealand (signature dated 1825 on front flyleaf) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 18 August 1944) -- donated to SMS 1944.

First editions of the Gospels of Matthew and John in literary Mongolian. The "Kalmuk" version of St. Matthew's gospel, translated by I.J. Schmidt, proved unintelligible to Mongolians in Irkutsk. It was received with such interest, however, that the Lama of the Mongols and the Prince of Chorinian Buriats' collected funds to petition the Russian Bible Society to produce the present version in ordinary Mongolian. To Buriat chiefs cooperated with Schmidt to produce the volume. Darlow & Moule 6821 and 6821a.
