MISSAL, use of Rome. Missale ad consuetudinem ecclesie Romane. Paris: Guillaume Eustache, 29th November 1511.
8o (170 x 109mm). PRINTED ON VELLUM. 248 leaves. Gothic type, double column (Canon of the mass in larger type, single column). Printed in red and black. Musical notation: square notes printed in black on a four-line staff printed in red. Eustache's large metacut printer's device (two armed centaurs) on title, a1r with fine metalcut borders. Occasional small metalcut scenes from the life of Christ, standing saints, etc., numerous metalcut initial capitals, some historiated, and smaller Lombard capitals. Full-page woodcut of the Crucifixion on n2v (122 x 79mm). (Strip cut from lower margin of C3 and C4, occasional minor soiling.) Eighteenth-century calf, gilt spine, edges stained red, silver clasp and catch (worn, front cover detached). Provenance: Louis Roch "cure de Grilly & Vicaire Darmance en Lanne" (inscription dated 3 June 1629, lower margin p3v) -- M.E. Dowson (inscription dated February 1891 on front free endleaf) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate).
