BIVERO, Pidro de. Sacrum sanctuarium cricis et patientiae crucifixorum et cruciferorum, emblematicis imaginibus laborantium et aegrotantium ornatum: artifices gloriosi novae artis bene vivend et moriendi. Antwerp: Plantin, 1634.
4o (213 x 155 mm). Engraved title-page, 42 scriptural emblems, 15 heart-shaped emblems and three vignettes (some occasional spotting). (Some light spotting and occasional soiling, a few marginal repairs.) 19th-century English blue hard-grained morocco gilt, edges gilt, by F. Bedford. Provenance: James William Ellsworth (bookplate) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Dawson's Bookshop, 1 February 1944) -- donated to SMS 1944.
A fine copy of this series of emblem plates. Two works by Bivero were issued by Plantin in 1634, the present and Sacrum oratorium piarum imaginum immaculatae Mariae et animae creatae. To the present, Brunet attributes 70 plates and vignettes, while to the latter the complement of plates and vignettes in text represented here. Praz similarly calls for the complement found here for the second title, and does not enumerate on the contents of the present. Brunet I, 955; Praz, p.275.
