2 volumes, 4o (253 x 182 mm). Half-titles, printed slips on titles reading: "Ne extra hanc Bibliothecam efferatur. Ex obedientia." Engraved frontispiece by J. Edelinck in vol. I, engraved head- and tail-pieces. (Some occasional pale spotting, some pale marginal staining in vol. II.) Contemporary red morocco, covers ruled in gilt, central panel with floral tools at the angles, centering the arms of Bishop Huetius, comb-marbled endleaves (some light wear at ends of spine). Provenance: Bishop Petrus Daniel Huetius, 1630-1721 (bindings; armorial bookplates dated 1692) -- Bernard Edward, Duke of Norfolk (bookplates) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplates; purchased from Maxwell Hunley 17 January 1942) -- donated to SMS January 1942.

A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY. Huetius, Bishop of Avaranches, was tutor to the book's dedicatee: the Dauphin Louis XV. Huetius's renowned skepticism was embodied particularly in his cogent attacks on René Descartes. Brunet I, 1679. (2)
