2o (315 x 205 mm). 19 full-sheet engraved maps, woodcut initials and tail-pieces, typographic head-pieces, shoulder notes (a few stains on world map and map of Brazil, some other mostly marginal pale soiling or staining, manuscript correction on map of Granata Nova and California, lower corner of final map [Estotilandia] torn away not affecting image). (Lacking the title-page, some browning and spotting.) Contemporary limp vellum (a bit soiled, loose in binding). Provenance: Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Dawson's Bookshop, Los Angeles, 31 July 1931) -- donated to SMS 6 December 1937.

FIRST EDITION of the first atlas devoted solely to the Americas. Among the maps is the first cartographic engraving devoted exclusively to Brazil. Other subjects include California, New England, Virginia, Florida, Mexico, Cuba, Canada and the Alaska region. Wyfliet utilized several previously published sources including the works of Acosta, Hakluyt, de Bry and Ramusio. This first edition to Wyfliet's supplement to Ptoloemy is very rare; a second edition was issued the same year, reset by Bogardus and containing nearly twice the number of leaves as this first printing.
