Riley sends the well-known California poet, a clipping from a local newspaper: "A paper from home...which has a lovely poem addressed to you, and written by a dear friend of mine...Dr. James Newton Matthews, of Mason, Illinois; and I'm fonder than ever of him for this song he sings to you."
