Writing to his nephew, Irving notes that a visit will be delayed: "I write this mainly to relieve you from the daily expectation of a visit from your aunt and myself." -- RILEY, James Whitcomb (1849-1916). Autograph note signed ("James Whitcomb Riley") TO JOAQUIN MILLER, Sacramento, 21 December 1892. 1 page, a small oblong, integral blank, envelope. [With:] A newspaper clipping labeled in Riley's hand. POET TO POET. Riley sends the well-known California poet, a clipping from a local newspaper: "A paper from home...which has a lovely poem addressed to you, and written by a dear friend of mine...Dr. James Newton Matthews, of Mason, Illinois; and I'm fonder than ever of him for this song he sings to you." Riley quotes a stanza: "To you, O Miller, who sing of the seas, Of the sunset-lands, and the isles that lie In the desolate wastes by the dim Andes To you, brave poet, my heart drams nigh." -- BELLOC, Hillaire (1870-1953).
