The circular white-enamelled dial with Roman chapters signed 'Ferdinand Berthoud à Paris', within an arched and waisted foliate-edged case surmounted by a floral finial, the sides with engraved pierced panels, on scrolling foliate feet, the shaped rectangular base inscribed in red chalk '42', with anchor escapement, the twin barrel movement with silk suspension, the back plate signed 'Ferdinand Berthoud A Paris', with Pietro Accorsi trade label

Lot Essay

Ferdinand Berthoud, born in Switzerland in 1727 became maître in Paris in 1754 and is generally acknowledged to be the greatest clock maker in France in the 18th Century. From 1786 he was horloger pensionnaire du roi et inspecteur général des machines pour la Marine.
