Lot Essay

The distinctive design of this chair, with pierced interlaced splat and shepherd's crook arms, demonstrates the influence of English chair designs by cabinet-makers such as Thomas Chippendale on Venetian chair-makers. A related chair in the Civiche Raccolte d'Arte Applicata, Milan, is illustrated in C. Alberici, Il Mobile Veneto, Milan, 1980, p. 257, fig. 383.
