Cast after a model by Pierre-Alexandre Schoenewerk, depicted loosely draped with vine leaves in her hair, seated on an outcrop above a riverbank, the toes of her right foot immersed, a water jar in her left hand, the base signed -- SCHOENEWERK Scptr. -- 12 7/8in. (32.8cm.) high

Lot Essay

Pierre-Alexandre Schoenewerk (b.1820, d.1885) was prevented from exhibiting and competing at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts because of his German descent, but he did exhibit at the the Salon between 1841 and 1847. After 1848 he concentrated more on mythological subjects of a mildly erotic nature, of which this bronze is a good example.
