Details
1996 Bordeaux

Broadly speaking, this is a more successful vintage on the Left Bank (St Estephe, Pauillac, St Julien, Margaux, Haut-Médoc, Pessac-Léognan) than on the Right Bank. The flowering of the vines took place early and in good conditions, however August's weather was disappointing, then September was cooller than hoped-for, with rain at the end of the month. Those growers who held their nerve, waiting for early October fine weather to bring Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to full ripeness, saw hot, fine weather establish itself. Optimal richness of grape-sugar was achieved, and the best wines have dense, concentrated fruitiness, allied to spicy, complex, long flavours. Tannins are abundant, and still softening. This is a classic vintage for top chateaux in Bordeaux's Left Bank districts. AH.

"It was outstanding last year - now it's great. Massive, rich red with wild tobacco and berry character. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Stunning. One of the wines of the vintage." Wine Specatator 6/15/98
