With its elegant, sinuous frame inset with gilt-decorated mirror panels, this table is closely related to the 'exotic' wall panelling and furniture of the now lost Spiegelkabinet in the Residenz in Würzburg. This opulent cabinet was executed circa 1742-44 by Johann Thalhofer and Anton Joseph Högler after designs by Johann Wolfgang von der Auvera. The cabinet was entirely decorated with shaped mirror plates in foliate giltwood borders and decorated with chinoiserie and rococo motifs, while the ceiling's gilt-stucco decoration was embellished with exotic animals seated on drapery. Von der Auvera designed a number of Speigeltische to match the panelling, with polychrome-decorated mirror tops and mirrors set into the frieze, and are illustrated in H. Kriesel and G. Himmelheber, Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels, Munich, 1970, vol. II, figs. 522-528.
