Lot Essay

With its characteristic rinceaux arabesque scrolling foliage this surtout-de-table is close to the oeuvre of 'Thomire á Paris'. Established by Pierre-Philippe Thomire and subsequently carried on by his sons, Thomire flourished until 1843, specialising in the production of exceptional bronzes d'ameublement. A design for a related surtout from Thomire's archives is now in the Bibliothàque Nationale, Paris (illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, fig. 5.16.15).
