Lot Essay

This image of the goldfinch and serpent was popular among roman mosaicists of the 18th and 19th centuries. A near identical depiction by Giacomo Raffaelli, dated to circa 1797-1805, formed part of a pair of micromosaic panels from the Hamilton Palace Collection (see Christie's, New York, 30 March 1999, lot 260).
