Lot Essay
The sinuous form and richly carved ornamentation of this table relate closely to an other example, now at the Monte di Pietà, Naples (A.P. Murano, Il mobile Napoletano del settecento, Naples, 1977, pl. XXIII). The present table shares many similar features as the example in the Monte di Pietà, including a central shell cartouche and the exaggerated form of rocaille cabochons at the head of its cabriole legs.
A related table was sold from the collection of Baronessa Jacobea Sapuppo, Christie's, Milan, 10-11 May 1999, lot 314. A further silvered example, with pierced frieze, was sold Sotheby's, London, 10 June 1999, lot 92. A larger giltwood table with similar features was sold in these Rooms, 11 May 2000, lot 67 (£9,400).
