Lot Essay

The present model is closely related to a number of bronze panthers thought to have originated in Paduan workshops in the first quarter of the 16th century, and further adapted in the mid-18th century by Giacomo Zoffoli. The current example is extremely close to Zoffoli's panther illustrated in Weihrauch (loc. cit.); the only variation is that the tail of the present model is docked.

A further example can also be seen in the Wallace collection, London (see Mann, loc. cit.).
