Lot Essay
The curvaceous outline and richly grained walnut veneers of this striking commode is typical of the fluid forms created by Venetian cabinet-makers during the rococo period. The same exaggerated, high-hipped form features on a Venetian bureau cabinet in the Forti collection, Venice, illustrated in S. Colombo, L' Arte del legno e del Mobile in Italia, Milan, 1981, p. 455, fig. 452, and also on a bureau-cabinet (which had the additional feature of animal carving to the angles) sold in these Rooms, 2 December 1998, lot 30 (also illustrated in G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile Veneziano del '700, Milan, 1958, fig. CCCLXXVII).
