The design for these splendid candelabra derives from celebrated Louis XVI examples which are traditionally attributed to the bronziers Pierre Gouthière (1732-1813) or François Rémond (1747-1812). These candelabra exists in various patterns, and have acanthus-wrapped branches with eagle-heads and a central flaming torch issuing from a Medici vase. Related examples are in the Frick collection (ill. H. Ottomeyer/P. Pröschel et. al, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. II, p. 237, fig. 4.3.6); the Huntington Art Gallery, San Marino and originally from the Alfred de Rothschild (R. Wark, French Decorative Art in the Huntington Collection, San Marino, 1961, figs. 96-97). A further pair originally from the collection of the Earls of Harewood, was sold by Alexander & Berendt Ltd., in these Rooms, 10 June 1993, lot 61 (£ 166,500).
