Lot Essay

In October 1747, Reinicke's notes record 2 Elephanten mit Decken in Thon repariert. Cf. Carl Albiker, Die Meissner Porzellantiere Im 18. Jahrhundert (Berlin 1959), pl. 255 for a very similar model carrying figures on its back; and Hermann Jedding, Meissener Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts (Münich 1979), p. 76, no. 116, for an ormolu-mounted elephant carrying an obelisk on its back in the Museum für Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt am Main, which he ascribes to Reinicke and Kändler.
