**An Inlaid Lacquer Writing Box
Meiji period (late 19th century)
The large rectangular box decorated in lacquer and inlays of coral, mother-of-pearl, horn, simulated pewter, wood and colored ivory with Kosekiko (Hiang Tsi) crossing a bridge on a mule while an attendant follows, the ground roiro and the bevelled edges lacquered in gold hiramaki-e toward the corners with scrollwork, the underside of the lid similarly inlaid with a large shishi, rocks, peonies and flowing river, the ground roiro and ura-nashiji, the lower interior fitted with one large removable tray holding a rectangular inkstone lacquered on the edges in fundame and a large metal mizuire in the form of a fluted kettle, both this tray, the area below and the base roiro and hirame
