Lot Essay

The pink overall ground color and sawtooth paint-decorated rim of this open salt make this a rarely seen example of Lehn's work.

For related turned wares by Lehn, several with pussy-willow and pomegranate decoration but none with a sawtooth border, in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, see Garvan, The Pennsylvania German Collection (Philadelphia, 1982), pp. 16-17, figs. 26-28 and p. 67, figs. 29-31.
