Lot Essay

Born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Wilhelm Schimel travelled to Pennsylvania and settled in the Cumberland Valley, near Carlisle. He is reputed to have bartered in carved animals for drink, meals or money, and did not travel far from the Condoguinet Creek area. Schimmel died in the Cumberland County Almshouse in 1890. The eagle illustrated here is a particularly large version of one of his signature animal forms.
