The impressed mark found on the present service was used during the tenure of Joseph Sewell as propietor (1804-1819). Upon his retirement, the name of the firm changed to Sewell & Donkin. See J. Jefferson Miller II, English Yellow-Glazed Earthenware, Smithsonian Institution, 1974, p.83 where the dates for Sewll & Donkin are given as 1828-1852 and John and Griselda Lewis, Pratt Ware 1780-1840, Antique Collector's Club, 1984, p. 99 where the name change is noted as of 1819.
