Lot Essay

James Mundy kindly confirmed the attribution of this drawing, on the basis of a photograph in a communication dated 23 October 2001. The drawing depicts the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria (1468-1560). James Mundy suggested that the 'likeness from life by Federico was unlikely, however since Federico made numerous drawings after paintings and sculpture by other artists, this might be one of those occasions'. The inscriptions on the verso, probably autograph, are color annotations.
