A study for the figures standing at the left of the large picture of Storie degli ordini cavallereschi hanging in the Choir of the Church of San Marco in Milan (M. Bona Castellotti, La pittura lombarda del '600, Milan, 1985, pl. 518). The picture, and its pendant, were painted in 1618 (in Bergamo, Palazzo della ragione, Il Seicento a Bergamo, 1987, p. 121). The large size of the present drawing reflects the unusual dimensions of the canvases, measuring more than four by seven meters (13 ft. 4 in. x 23 ft. 4 in.).
Bartolomeo Roverio was a pupil of Camillo Procaccino and worked in Milan. He painted frescoes for the Cathedral of Milan, SS. Pietro e Paolo, Santa Maria Podone, San Sebastiano and other churches on Milan. He also decorated the Charterhouse of Garegnano and the Church of Santa Lucia di Valdisotto near Bormio. Padre Orlandi describes the pictures in San Marco as his best work (P.A. Orlandi, Abecedario Pittorico...., Venice, 1753, p. 363) and the biographer Lanzi also mentions him as a rare artist and adds that 'there are a few works left which have some grandeur' (Historie de la peinture en Italie, Paris, 1824, IV, pp. 158-9).
Roverio was one of the most austere representatives of the Milanese Conter-Reformation, close in style to his exact contemporary Cerano.
