Lot Essay

Born in Carpentras in 1745, Bidauld moved to Lyon at an early age, where he befriended the amateur artist Jean-Jacques de Boissieu. He specialized in flower paintings and views of Lyon and his first dated works are from 1765. He also engraved a number of landscapes (S. Gutwirth, in the exhibition catalogue, Jean-Joseph Xavier Bidauld, Carpentras, 1978, figs. 1-2), and was the first teacher of his brother, the landscape artist Jean-Joseph-Xavier Bidauld (1758-1846).
