This drawing was first attributed to Rembrandt by Frits Lugt in a letter dated 16 November 1968. The attribution was subsequently confirmed by K.G. Boon, who dated the drawing to 1645-50, and by Professor Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann. The latter pointed out that the gray wash was added to the drawing by a later hand.
Another landscape by Rembrandt with a similar motive and also with additional gray wash was sold at Christie's Amsterdam, 14 November 1994, lot 101.
