A design for one of eight full plate lithographs by Moore illustrating André Gide's translation of Goethe's Prometheus, published together with seven small lithographs by Henri Jonquières in Paris in 1951.
The composition was developed from a leaf of studies formerly part of the Promethée sketchbook, also known as Notebook 7, dismembered and sold separately by the artist in 1984 (HMF 2564). Although the sketchbook and larger drawings are usually dated 1949-50, it is now known that the request for Moore to illustrate the work was not made until December 1949, and it is unlikely that the majority of the drawings were executed until 1950.
Another version of this composition, in darker tones, is in a private American collection (HMF 2592).
We are grateful to Anita Feldman Bennet, curator at the Henry Moore Foundation, for her kind assistance in the preparation of this note.
