Painted in colors with the Archangel Michael holding the prone Lucifer down with a gilt rope and a foot on his chest, the Devil portrayed with shaggy gray hair and horns with flames issuing from his body, Michael with shaded blue wings, laced sandals and a skirt of feathers, holding three arrows aloft

Howard & Ayers. op. cit., illustrate a plate from the Mottahedeh collection (sold Sotheby's New York, 19 October 2000, lot 240) and quote Revelations XII, 7-9 as its possible source: And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon...And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil...".
