Enamelled in the center with the arms of Dobree, under the enamel colors is visible the words 'green' and 'red', the motto SPE VIVITUR also incised into the enamel, four famille rose floral clusters on the rim

Lot Essay

D.S. Howard (op. cit., p. 960) writes "This is an unusual example of the failure of the Chinese painters to understand the European instructions sent with the original drawing or bookplate....Only one other example of this type of error is known", and suggests that the Chinese may have been overly scrupulous with the order as the arms on a service made five years earlier for another Dobree had been painted incorrectly
