Lot Essay

'The Stocking Mender' is based on a Sèvres model by Etienne-Maurice Falconet of circa 1765. The pair of 'Swiss Boy and Girl' have been wrongly attributed to Derby by Barrett and Thorpe. The models are unquestionably Rockingham and are known also in bone china, as noted by D.G. Rice, Ornamental Rockingham Porcelain, London, 1965, p. 140, pl. 102.

Cf. Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures 1750-1848, London, 1990, pp. 189-190, nos. 22, 23 and 24 and pp. 234-235, no. 77
