Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave (1755-1831) entered the army in 1775 and rose to the rank of General by 1809. He was Colonel of the 31st Foot Regiment from 1793 to 1831. A supporter of Pitt in Parliament, he was Master of the Ordnance until 1818. Charles George, 2nd Lord Arden (1756-1840) was the third son of John, 2nd Earl of Egmont, an M.P. and a Lord of the Admiralty.
