A GEORGE III MAHOGANY BUREAU-CABINET
Attributed to Gillows, North Country, circa 1785
The rectangular molded cornice over a pair of astragal glazed doors enclosing shelves above a slant front case opening to a fitted interior with removable central section with secret compartments above one long drawer flanked by a pair of short drawers over three further long graduated drawers on shaped bracket feet, remnants of paper label to reverse

Lot Essay

The design and proportion of the base of this bureau cabinet relates it to a design by the London and Lancaster firm of Gillows. The similar design for a writing desk dated 1787, with three drawers below the fall is illustrated in L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, 1995, fig. 141.
