The massive rectangular verde antico marble top over a frieze carved with shells, c-scrolls and gadrooned borders, on square tapering legs headed by paterae, previously gilt, with a label Antonios 19629 and another with a catalogue description from a past sale at Christie's, where the table is described as being gilt

By repute the Dukes of Westminster, sold Christie's London.

Lot Essay

It is possible that this table formed part of the original furnishings of Eaton Hall, Cheshire, seat of the Duke of Westminster, who employed Albert Waterhouse as architect on this monumental project. Construction began in 1870, was not completed until 1882, and was rumoured to have cost the substantial sum of £600,000.
