Lot Essay

This apparently unique service displays the arms of the eight great-grandparents probably of Adriaan van Reverhorst (1720-51) of the Hague, a VOC merchant at Canton, or of his brother Theodorus (1706-58), a member of the VOC Court of Justice in Batavia from 1735 to 52. See J. Kroes, De Nederlandsche Leeuw, no. 11-12, pp. 305-22. Le Corbeiller (op. cit., pp. 96-99) notes that the service "must have been unusually extensive", and that this covered shape, based on a silver form, is apparently unique within either Delft or Chinese export
