With a large, boldly painted coat-of-arms for Brydges, Duke of Chandos, impaling Willoughby and Middleton in the center supported by scaly beasts in grisaille, the rim filled with peony and chrysanthemum sprigs in Imari colors

Made for James Brydges, advanced to the Dukedom in 1719 and known as 'Princely Chandos'. J. Goldsmith-Phillips, China-Trade Porcelain, p. 84 calls him "one of the notable personalities of 18th century England" and "a splendid figure". He describes the Duke's sumptuous entertaining of such guests as Alexander Pope and Handel at Canons, the great London house for which this service was made. D.S.
