Boldly painted in the center with a large coat-of-arms of Gough impaling Hynde against exuberantly scrolling acanthus leaves and beneath the boar's head crest, the rim with clusters of flowering branches in bright tones of underglaze blue

Lot Essay

Captain Harry Gough (1681-1751) made numerous voyages to Canton, where he was known as Amy Wang, the 'White-Haired Boy'. He married Elizabeth Hynde in 1719; this is one of four services they commissioned. See D.S. Howard, op. cit., pp. 167-8
