Richard Diebenkorn, along with Clyfford Still was one of the most important artists of the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism and an influential faculty member at the acclaimed California School of Fine Arts. Untitled 1955 is from the seminal period of abstraction both for Richard Diebenkorn and the movement and was painted in Berkeley at the height of his first abstract period and just before the artist turned to figuration the following year. During this time, Diebenkorn developed a painterly cubism-influenced Abstract Expressionist style, marked by aggressively painted passages, with occasional areas of solid color enlivened with a whimsical line and bulbous shapes.
