In the 1984, Rauschenberg formed the ROCI project (Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange), in which the artist traveled and created works related to and inspired by the visited country. Canary Frostbite is from the "Urban Bourbons" series of large-scale paintings on aluminum inspired by his ROCI/Cuba project. They are marked by the juxtaposition of silkscreened images of Rauschenberg's own photographs with bright fields of color.
